This is my 300th post. It is the beginning of a six page comic I just finished featuring Dave Sim’s character, Cerebus the Aardvark. I think I am the first (and at this point only) person aside from Barry Smith to finish an authorized Cerebus story not counting Dave himself, of course. I hope Dave approves. Barry Smith was probably half my age when he did his story. I wish mine was half as good as his.

I have always been impressed by Dave Sim’s Cerebus. Well, maybe not always but definitely after issue three. What I didn’t realize was how ably he had drawn Cerebus itself. The poses and expressions always look natural but were in thousands of variations. You have to look more closely when drawing the character yourself.

This is page one of a comic strip I did as a unique wedding gift commissioned by a woman named Julia. I penciled, inked, lettered and coloured it. Julia and I wrote it together. Both she and her husband, a comic fan, were very happy with it. She printed them out, quite large, and mounted them on boards. I still want to get a photo of her with the finished prints. I had quite a time of it, getting these things onto tumbler. My problem was that I created them as CMYK files, but in JPEG. The site was happy enough with JPEG but not with CMYK which is commonly used for printing. I messed with the files over and over until I realized my problem and converted them to RGB.

I enjoyed doing this drawing of Chris. I did all these drawings, and dozens of similar ones, in colour. The problem was that there was no colour photocopier in the school. The other problem was that I didn’t get a record of each one because I would often colour them before thinking to get a black and white photocopy.

Here is another one. I have never met this man but I had lots of news clippings and photos to work from. He was an art teacher who devoted his life (to the point of retirement) to his art and to his students. It was an honour to be able to draw him.
